Lemon essential oil has a sharp, fresh scent, extracted from the fresh lemon peel through cold pressing. This oil is known for its refreshing properties, sharpening concentration, and is commonly used in air fresheners for offices and banks. It is believed to aid in relieving rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. Additionally, it has been used to treat skin issues like abscesses, carbuncles, and acne. Lemon oil strengthens the immune system and helps detoxify the body.
Usage: When used in an oil burner (a few drops in water), the vapor from lemon oil can be beneficial for colds, laryngitis, headaches, and flu. The scent of lemon is helpful in alleviating depression, irritability, stress, lethargy, and fatigue. It improves mood and clears the mind. When added to a bath or mixed with massage oil, it can relieve digestive issues, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, obesity, rheumatism, depression, and stress. It is also used to help relieve hangovers.
The lemon plant is believed to have originated in India, and possibly China, and was brought to Europe by crusaders in the Middle Ages. Due to its rich content of vitamins A, B, and C, sailors were given a daily dose to prevent scurvy, eye problems, and other vitamin deficiencies. The first significant cultivation of lemons in Europe began in Genoa in the mid-15th century. Later, Christopher Columbus introduced it to the Americas. Spanish conquests further spread lemon seeds. Initially, lemons were mainly used as decorations and medicine, and only much later in culinary applications.
